Munich police have shot dead a suspect who opened fire on officers near the Israeli consulate, officials said Wednesday.

According to police, the suspect, a 21-year-old German citizen, approached two officers who were patrolling the area and opened fire with a handgun.

The officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not yet released any information about the suspect's motive for the attack.

The Israeli consulate in Munich was closed following the shooting, and the area was cordoned off by police.

The German government has condemned the attack and expressed its solidarity with Israel.
